12 passages written for this book (6 stories, 6 true passages), 3 tick-the-box questions and 1 written answer each, answers
These Christmas reading comprehension worksheets have 12 passages written for this book, each on its own page with four questions underneath. Six are short stories: baking gingerbread, a snowman whose hat blows away, a lost mitten, a letter to Grandpa, decorating the tree and a homemade gift. The other six are true. Every passage is 76 to 85 words, which suits most second and third graders.

The true passages, and the surprises in them
Each true topic was picked because it holds a surprise. Rudolph is not an old legend at all. A copywriter named Robert L. May invented him in 1939 for the Montgomery Ward store, which gave away almost two and a half million copies of the story that year. The big red parts of a poinsettia are leaves rather than petals. In 1885 a Vermont farm boy named Wilson Bentley took the first photo of a single snowflake. The other three cover the 1848 newspaper picture that made Christmas trees popular in England, why both male and female reindeer grow antlers, and Christmas in Australia, where December falls in summer.

How the questions work
Each page has three tick-the-box questions with three choices, then one question to answer in writing. The answer to every question is in the passage, and a script checked that before the book was built. So if a child gets one wrong, send them back to reread the passage. The written questions ask a little more, for example how Sam kept the snowman’s hat on the second time, or where the real poinsettia flowers are. Pages with space left over end with a box to draw a favorite part.

What is in the 14 pages
- A cover that lists the passages.
- 12 passages, story and true passage taking turns, with four questions each.
- An answer key on the last page for the grown-up.
One passage a day takes about fifteen minutes and covers the first two weeks of December. For the same layout in November, use the Thanksgiving reading comprehension passages. For holiday number practice, try the Christmas math worksheets. Print at 100% scale. The book comes as an A4 PDF and a US Letter PDF with the same pages.
Printing this one correctly
In your printer dialog set Scale to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page. Fit to page shrinks the tracing letters and they stop matching the size a child's hand is learning.
Plain paper is fine for crayons and pencils. If your child uses felt pens, 100 gsm paper stops the ink bleeding to the next sheet.
