12 very short stories written for this book, 3 tick-the-box questions each, a box to draw the story, answers

These kindergarten reading comprehension worksheets give a new reader one very short story per page and three questions to answer by ticking a box. There are 12 stories and 36 questions, and every story was written for this book. Each one is four to seven short sentences long, between 25 and 31 words, made of sight words and simple words like cat, hat, bus and duck.

What is in the 14 pages

  • 12 story pages: one story in large print, then three questions with three answers each.
  • Tick the box: a child picks one answer per question, so no writing is needed yet.
  • A drawing box: the bottom half of each page asks the child to draw the story.
  • Last page: every answer, story by story, for the grown-up.

The 12 stories

The Cat and the Hat, The Bus, The Big Apple, Two Fish, Snow Day, The Duck Pond, My Toy Car, Bath Time, The Pumpkin Patch, The Rainbow, Birthday Cake and Night, Night. Most are about things a five year old already knows from home and school: a dog that will not get in the bath, or blowing out birthday candles.

Why the questions work for kindergarten

Every answer is a word or phrase taken straight from the story, so a child who is not sure can point back to the line and find it. At this age, that habit of looking back is what the sheets practice. The three questions follow the story in order too, so the first question is about the first lines and the last question is about the ending.

Some wrong answers are close on purpose. In The Duck Pond the choices are quack, quack, moo, moo and oink, oink, which a child can answer from the story or from what they know about ducks, and that is a good thing to talk about together.

Who it is for

The stories suit kindergarten, ages about 5 to 6, and pre-K children who listen while a grown-up reads aloud and then answer by ticking. When a child is ready for longer stories and a written answer, move on to the 1st grade reading comprehension worksheets. For the words themselves, the kindergarten sight words tracing and CVC words reading worksheets come first.

Printing

Print at 100% scale, not Fit to page, so the tick boxes and the drawing box stay a good size. The book comes as an A4 PDF and a US Letter PDF with the same pages. Black ink only.

Printing this one correctly

In your printer dialog set Scale to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page. Fit to page shrinks the tracing letters and they stop matching the size a child's hand is learning.

Plain paper is fine for crayons and pencils. If your child uses felt pens, 100 gsm paper stops the ink bleeding to the next sheet.
