12 sheets: counting, picture addition and subtraction, more or fewer, sums within 20, number bonds to 10, skip counting, answers

These Thanksgiving math worksheets are real kindergarten and 1st grade math with pumpkins, leaves, acorns, pies, turkeys and corn doing the counting. There are 92 questions on 12 sheets, and every picture is a plain outline, so a child who finishes early can color the page in.

What is in the 14 pages

  • Sheets 1-2: count a group of pumpkins, leaves, turkeys or pies and write how many. Groups run from 1 to 10.
  • Sheets 3-4: add two rows of pictures, pumpkins first and then acorns. Every total stays within 10.
  • Sheets 5-6: take away. Some pies or leaves are crossed out and the child counts what is left.
  • Sheet 7: two groups side by side. Circle the one with more.
  • Sheets 8-9: number sentences, addition within 20 and then subtraction within 20, 12 on each sheet.
  • Sheet 10: number bonds to 10. The whole is 10 and the child writes the missing part.
  • Sheet 11: skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s with three empty boxes in each row.
  • Sheet 12: a review that mixes addition and subtraction, so the child has to read the sign.
  • Last page: every answer, sheet by sheet.

Pictures first, then numbers

The book moves from things a child can touch with a finger to numbers on their own. On sheet 3 the first row is 2 pumpkins and 4 pumpkins, so the child can count all six or start at 4 and count on two more. Sheet 4 suggests counting on from the bigger group, which is the habit that makes sheets 8 and 9 quicker later. By then the pictures are gone and 8 + 5 or 14 – 9 has to be worked out in the head or on fingers.

Taking away with crossed out pies

Subtraction is easier to see than to explain. On sheet 5 the first row shows 10 pies with 6 crossed out, and 4 are left to count. The number sentence sits beside the pictures, so the child sees that 10 – 6 = 4 means the same thing as the crossed out pies. Sheet 6 does the same with leaves, from 9 – 7 down to 4 – 2.

Number bonds to 10

Sheet 10 has eight bonds. Each one shows the whole, 10, at the top and one part below it, such as 7 or 4. The child writes the other part. Knowing the pairs that make 10 by heart is what later lets a child add 8 + 5 by thinking 8 + 2 + 3, so it is worth going over this sheet more than once.

Who it is for

Sheets 1 to 7 suit kindergarten, ages about 5 to 6. Sheets 8 to 12 suit 1st grade, or a kindergarten child who already adds within 10 without pictures. For more number sentences, try the addition and subtraction within 20 book. For more pairs that make 10, use the number bonds to 10 worksheets.

Printing

Print at 100% scale, not Fit to page, so the answer boxes stay large enough for small handwriting. The book comes as an A4 PDF and a US Letter PDF with the same sheets. Black ink only, and the pictures are left white for coloring.

Printing this one correctly

In your printer dialog set Scale to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page. Fit to page shrinks the tracing letters and they stop matching the size a child's hand is learning.

Plain paper is fine for crayons and pencils. If your child uses felt pens, 100 gsm paper stops the ink bleeding to the next sheet.
