132 words and sentences: a or an by sound, tricky words, fill and circle, answers

These a and an worksheets teach the one rule children get wrong most often: the choice depends on the first sound of the word, not the first letter. A child who has learned “a, e, i, o, u take an” will write “a hour” and “an uniform” with full confidence, and both are wrong. So the book starts with words where letter and sound agree, then moves on to the ones where they do not.

A and an worksheet: write a or an before twelve words such as apple, ball and egg
Sheet 1 – write a or an before each word.

What is in the 14 pages

  • Sheets 1-3: write a or an before 36 everyday words, such as an apple, a ball, an egg and a kite.
  • Sheets 4-6: the tricky words. Silent h (an hour, an honest boy), u that sounds like “you” (a uniform, a unicorn) and one that starts with a “w” sound (a one-rupee coin).
  • Sheets 7-9: 24 sentences with a gap, such as “I saw ___ elephant at the zoo.”
  • Sheets 10-12: circle the right one out of two, such as “a hour / an hour”.
  • Last page: every answer.

Say it out loud

The quickest test is to say the word. If it starts with a vowel sound, it takes an. If it starts with any other sound, it takes a. Hour starts with an “o” sound because the h is silent, so it is an hour. Uniform starts with a “you” sound, which is a consonant sound, so it is a uniform. The tip line on sheets 4 to 6 says exactly this, and the child should read each word aloud before writing.

Sheet 4 – listen to the sound: an hour, a uniform.

Words with an adjective in front

The article goes with the very next word, not the noun. That is why sheet 7 has both “a red bag” and “an easy sum”, and why “an old house” on sheet 9 starts with an even though house on its own takes a. It helps to point at the word right after the gap and say it aloud.

Fill in a or an worksheet with eight sentences
Sheet 7 – a or an inside a sentence.

Who it is for

The sheets suit children of about 5 to 8, usually in class 1 or class 2, who can read short words. Children still learning which letters are vowels can start with the vowels worksheets. For the next grammar step, the singular and plural worksheets use many of the same nouns.

Printing

Print at 100% scale, not Fit to page. The book comes as an A4 PDF and a US Letter PDF with the same sheets. Black ink only.

Printing this one correctly

In your printer dialog set Scale to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page. Fit to page shrinks the tracing letters and they stop matching the size a child's hand is learning.

Plain paper is fine for crayons and pencils. If your child uses felt pens, 100 gsm paper stops the ink bleeding to the next sheet.
