80 sums, counters drawn beside every one, answers at the back

The trouble with a page of bare sums is that a child who cannot do them yet has nothing to do. They guess, or they stop. Every sum in this book comes with the objects drawn next to it — two groups of circles, a plus sign between them — so counting is always available as a way in.

Sheet 1 – eight sums, every one with its counters.

What is on each page

Eight sums in two columns. Each card holds the first group of circles, a plus sign, the second group, then the sum written out and a box for the answer. Ten sheets, 80 sums, and no sheet ever repeats a question — eight near-identical cards of which two ask the same thing is the fastest way to lose a five-year-old.

The order it goes in

The sums are drawn from every pair that adds to 10 or less, shuffled. That is deliberate rather than lazy: a page of sums that all start with 5 lets a child answer by pattern instead of by adding. Mixed pairs make them look at each one.

Counting on, and when to stop counting

Most children start by counting every circle from one. The next step is counting on — starting at the bigger number and counting up the smaller one, so 8 + 2 is “eight… nine, ten” rather than counting to ten from scratch. It is worth saying out loud once and then leaving alone; children switch to it themselves when the numbers get big enough to make counting from one tedious.

The step after that is not counting at all, and it comes from knowing the number bonds to ten by heart.

The answers

The last page has every answer, laid out by sheet. It is for the grown-up marking a stack of them, not for the child, so print pages 2 to 11 if you would rather it did not travel with the sheets.

What comes next

Subtraction Within 10 is the mirror of this book, with the taken-away objects crossed out rather than removed. If counting itself is still the sticking point, go back to Counting Worksheets 1-20.

Printing this one correctly

In your printer dialog set Scale to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page. Fit to page shrinks the tracing letters and they stop matching the size a child's hand is learning.

Plain paper is fine for crayons and pencils. If your child uses felt pens, 100 gsm paper stops the ink bleeding to the next sheet.
