Base ten blocks, tens and ones, expanded form and digit value, answers

These tens and ones worksheets teach the idea every two-digit sum depends on: in 47 the 4 does not mean four, it means forty. A child who knows that can carry and borrow. A child who does not is moving digits around by a rule they were told, and it falls apart as soon as the sums get longer.

Tens and ones worksheet with base ten rods and unit squares to count
Sheet 1 – count the rods and squares, then write the number.

Twelve sheets in four steps

  1. Count the blocks (sheets 1-4). Each card shows tens as tall rods of ten squares and ones as single squares. The child writes how many tens, how many ones, then the number. Sheets 1-2 stay under 60, sheets 3-4 go to 99.
  2. How many tens and ones (sheets 5-6). The number is given, e.g. 58, and the child splits it: 5 tens and 8 ones.
  3. Expanded form (sheets 7-8). The same split written as a sum: 63 = 60 + 3.
  4. Back to the number (sheets 9-12). Build the number from words such as “4 tens and 9 ones”, then find the value of an underlined digit.

The last page has every answer.

The rows that are written the other way round

On sheets 9 and 10 every third row puts the ones first: “9 ones and 8 tens”. The answer is 89, not 98. This is the most useful row in the book, because a child who writes 98 is reading the digits in order rather than thinking about what they are worth. When that happens, go back to the blocks.

Place value before carrying

In most Indian schools tens and ones come in class 1 and carrying in class 2. In the US and UK, place value to 100 is a grade 1 standard, or year 1. Wherever a child is, do this book before the carrying sheets in 2 digit addition worksheets and the borrowing sheets in 2 digit subtraction worksheets. The small box those books use for a carried ten only makes sense to a child who knows that ten ones are one ten.

Make it real before it goes on paper

Bundles of ten ice-cream sticks tied with a rubber band do the same job as the rods on sheet 1, and a child can take a bundle apart. Build 34 with sticks, then find it on the page. It takes five minutes and makes the drawing mean something.

What comes before this

A child should be able to count to 100 and spot a missing number in the sequence before starting. If not, missing numbers 1 to 100 comes first, and ten frames 1-20 is the gentlest start on “ten and some more”. The rest of the math shelf for this age is on the class 1 math worksheets page.

Printing this one correctly

In your printer dialog set Scale to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page. Fit to page shrinks the tracing letters and they stop matching the size a child's hand is learning.

Plain paper is fine for crayons and pencils. If your child uses felt pens, 100 gsm paper stops the ink bleeding to the next sheet.
