Twelve pages, each a finished coloured example above a blank outline

Hand a two-year-old a colouring page and the usual answer is a single scribble across the middle – not because they cannot do it, but because a blank outline gives no clue what it is meant to become. Every page in this book solves that the simplest way available: the finished picture is printed directly above the blank one.

The twelve pictures

The sun, a big tree, a red apple, a balloon, a flower, a fish, a little car, a house, ice cream, a butterfly, a kite, a cloud. Twelve pages, no cover to colour, no instructions page – the first sheet you print is a picture.

Example on top, outline below

  • The example is coloured in flat, pale fills with a heavy dark contour, so it reads as “this bit is one colour” rather than as an artwork to match.
  • The outline underneath is the same shape at the same size, black on white, with no interior detail. Nothing on the page needs a fine grip.
  • Both sit in rounded cards, which gives the crayon a stopping edge and keeps the page from looking like a test.

Drawn for a fist, not a pincer grip

The shapes are chosen for the movements a toddler already has: circles and back-and-forth. The tree crown is three overlapping circles rather than a leafy outline; the ice cream is a triangle under two circles. There is no thin gap anywhere on the page, so a crayon held in a fist never has anywhere to fail. Where a toddler’s grip is headed next is set out in pencil grip by age.

Colour is not the lesson

The examples show a red apple and a yellow sun, but a blue apple is not an error at this age – matching the example is one way to use the page and ignoring it is another. What the page is actually teaching is that a mark can stay inside a boundary, which is the same skill that later keeps a letter on a line.

What to print next

Big shapes coloring pages is the next step up – larger areas, no example needed. Vehicles to trace and color adds the word underneath the picture for children who are ready to write. When colouring has become steady, tracing activities for preschoolers is where the pencil starts following a line.

Printing

A4, one side per sheet. This is the one book here that is worth printing in colour, because the example half is doing the explaining – but a grayscale print still works, since the fills are pale and the outlines are heavy. Thicker paper is worth it if you are using markers.

Printing this one correctly

In your printer dialog set Scale to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page. Fit to page shrinks the tracing letters and they stop matching the size a child's hand is learning.

Plain paper is fine for crayons and pencils. If your child uses felt pens, 100 gsm paper stops the ink bleeding to the next sheet.
