12 sheets, 5 Dolch sight words each (40 pre-primer, 20 primer), 5 yes or no sentences and 3 finish the sentence each, answers
These sight word sentences are for children who know a few sight words and are ready to read them in a whole sentence. There are 12 sheets. Each one starts with five new Dolch words in big boxes, then gives five sentences to read and judge, yes or no, and three sentences to finish by ticking the right word. The first sheet teaches I, a, the, see and can, and its first sentence is I can see a cat.

Only words the child has met
Every sentence on a sheet uses only the sight words taught on that sheet and the ones before it, plus short words a child can sound out, like cat, dog, bus, hat and pig. So a child on sheet 4 never meets a sight word from sheet 9. The order follows the Dolch lists: sheets 1 to 8 cover all 40 pre-primer words, and sheets 9 to 12 add 20 primer words such as am, are, like, she, was, went, this, what, yes and have.
Yes or no makes them read for meaning
A child can sound out a sentence without understanding it. The yes or no question stops that. A dog can run gets a yes. A cup can jump gets a no. To answer, the child has to picture what the sentence says, and the silly ones, like The bed can see, usually get a laugh, which helps. Out of the 60 sentences, 36 are true and 24 are not, so guessing yes every time does not work.

What is in the 14 pages
- 12 sheets: five word boxes, five yes or no sentences and three finish the sentence questions.
- A drawing box at the bottom of each sheet for a picture of sentence 1.
- Answer key on the last page, sheet by sheet.

Using the sheets
Read the five new words together first and point to each one. Then let the child read the sentences alone and tick. One sheet a day takes about ten minutes. If a child has not met these words yet, start with the pre-k sight words tracing pages or the kindergarten sight words tracing book, and for more sounding out, the CVC words reading worksheets.
Print at 100% scale. The book comes as an A4 PDF and a US Letter PDF with the same pages, in black ink only.
Printing this one correctly
In your printer dialog set Scale to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page. Fit to page shrinks the tracing letters and they stop matching the size a child's hand is learning.
Plain paper is fine for crayons and pencils. If your child uses felt pens, 100 gsm paper stops the ink bleeding to the next sheet.
