12 paired units, 24 activity pages, answer keys and a practice record
Most CVC material stops at the word. A child who can read cat, mat and pat in a list still has to learn that the three of them make a sentence that means something. This book is built in paired units: a short story on the first page, and the word work that story used on the second.

How a unit works
Page one gives four focus words, a four-sentence story built only from words the child can decode, and three Read and answer questions about what happened. Page two takes the same four words apart: fill the missing vowel, write the whole word, complete a sentence, then draw and retell the story.

The twelve stories
A cat on a mat, A bag for Dad, A red pen, A wet hen, A pig can dig, A lid on a tin, A dog and a log, A box for Bob, A bug on a rug, A bun for Mum, The lost cap, A picnic in the sun.
Units 1-2 are short a, 3-4 short e, 5-6 short i, 7-8 short o, 9-10 short u. Units 11 and 12 mix all five vowels, which is the first point at which the child has to hear the vowel rather than assume it from the page they are on.
Why the vowel gets removed, not the consonant
The word work prints c_t, m_t, p_t – never _at. Consonants are the sounds children hear easily and vowels are the ones they guess, so blanking the vowel is the only version of this exercise that tests anything.

What is at the back
- Four answer key pages, covering the reading questions, word work and sentence answers, with a note that retelling and drawing responses will vary.
- A practice record – twelve unit names with a date line each. It is a record of sessions, deliberately not a score.
- A closing page that asks the child to re-read a favourite page and explain one answer using words from the text.

Who it is for
UKG or Class 1, roughly ages 5-7, for a child who already knows common letter sounds and is starting to blend. If blending is still new, start with phonics worksheets for kindergarten and come back. If the letters themselves are the sticking point, CVC words tracing worksheets handles the writing side. The step after this book is digraphs and consonant blends, where two letters start making one sound.
Printing
32 pages, A4, and it works printed one side or double sided – each unit is a facing pair, so double-sided printing keeps the story and its word work on the same sheet. Text sizes are set for a beginning reader and are larger than an adult page; do not scale it down. Answer keys are the last four content pages if you would rather not hand them over.
Printing this one correctly
In your printer dialog set Scale to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page. Fit to page shrinks the tracing letters and they stop matching the size a child's hand is learning.
Plain paper is fine for crayons and pencils. If your child uses felt pens, 100 gsm paper stops the ink bleeding to the next sheet.
